It is so great being back to school with the students! Those extra days were nice, but I was ready to get back to work!
The Great Lesson: This month, we’ll be delving into the Montessori Great Lesson: The Time Line of Life. This is an opportunity to throw ourselves into an exploration of prehistoric times and research ancient plants and extinct animals.
Gardening: Hopefully the sun will start warming us up this month and we’ll also begin getting some extra garden areas dug up and ready for planting in February.
Math Practice: As we enter the second half of the year, it is more important than ever to bulk up our skill practice, especially in math. Being fluent with math facts is key to being successful with higher, more complicated math down the road. I have registered all 2nd and 3rd years on the Xtra Math web site. Please use it. Another good online resource is MathCafe.com. There is no magic way to learn facts but repetitive practice! Try to practice facts daily. First years should moving toward mastering addition and subtraction facts to10. Second years should be focused on addition and subtraction facts through 20. Third years should be practicing multiplication and division facts, as well as addition and subtraction.
Reading: Along with the zoology and botany work happening this month, I’d like to remind you of the importance of having your child READ every night. Children are engaged in reading activates through out the school day, but nothing can replace reading at home with you or a family member!
Conference: Communication is very important in the Montessori classroom. If you would like to have a mini conference at the beginning of February, please email me to let me know. If needed, I’ll set up a Sign Up Genius schedule.
As always, Ms. Jen has some fabulous links and on line resources that she shared with her families that you may find interesting and helpful as well. Please take a look at her classroom news at http://coastalmontessoricharter.org/happy-new-year-6/
