September Artist of the Month is Paul Klee

Each month at CMCS, the Lower Elementary students are presented with an artist and his/her artwork during art.  They are given opportunities to engage with the artwork and learn more about this artist through shelf work that is placed in the classroom. Each student is expected to engage with the artist’s work and select a favorite art piece during the month, to prepare for our group discussions.  For our focus this month, I read this book about Paul Klee’s life to introduce the artist and his artwork.

We will use elements from our focus artist to create artwork and learn about materials and genres as the month progresses.  This past week, we were inspired by Klee’s painting The Cat and The Bird to focus on drawing. This piece led to a lesson for the first years on how to properly use watercolors.  The second and third years reviewed the techniques as we focused on warm and cool color pallets.

Once these pieces are completed, they will be uploaded to our online gallery on Artsonia giving our CMCS Artists an opportunity to share their creations with family and friends, near and far.  (Be sure to register your student’s account with Artsonia if they are a new to CMCS.  Emails should go out this week enabling you to complete this registration process.)
