Rhythmic Dance

Week of Dec 4th

This week in PE the lower and upper elementary students will be continuing their Dance Unit. Last week was a fun week of Line Dances. Line Dancing involves people standing in lines and performing dance movements together. The upper and lower elementary classes learned Line dances that were high in energy and very entertaining.

Dances Learned

  • 1st Years – Hey Baby
  • 2nd-3rd Years- Move it, Move It
  • 4th-6th Years- Space Jam

This week the focus will be rhythmic dances. The lower elementary will be using Lummi sticks or as some people called them rhythm sticks. A similar stick game is the Ti Rakau of the Maori People, played with meter-long sticks.

The upper elementary will be using “Jump Bands” this week. Jump bands take the place of Philippine Folk Dance known as “Tinikling”. The dance involves two people beating, tapping, and siding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. During these lessons the students will also be learning about the culture behind these dances.
