This past Friday, we started Pumpkin Math! (Thank you for the donations of pumpkins!) There are 6 groups of 3 or 4 students per pumpkin. On Friday, the students had to work together to come up with a name for their pumpkin, some “back ground” information about them (for some writing lessons later this week!), and they needed to design a face. This sounds easy, but with so many egocentric little minds, it was more difficult than you’d think! There was a lot of negotiating, compromising, and collaborating going on that afternoon! I am happy to say, that after about an hour of chatter, we have names for each pumpkin, some fun facts about them, and a face to go with each one!
Monday, begins the measuring! First we estimate the weight of the pumpkins and the number of seeds inside…then, each pumpkin will have it’s circumference measured, and its weight checked followed by carving of the faces! It’s a lot of work, but we use the data gathered for math activities for the rest of the week.
Also, we had some volunteers with us this Friday. For the next several Friday mornings, we will have 2 Middle School students who will come and volunteer in our room. This past week, Anna and Tatum listened to students read aloud and they helped me put updates on our classroom computers. Having these Middle School volunteers on Fridays is going to be great!
