BACK to WORK –New Year, New Goals, New Winner!

It has been such a long, wonderful winter break, and now we are all getting used to the routine of early mornings and productive school/work days once again. Please make sure students are bringing home necessary items for completion at home, as we are preparing students for the rigors of high school here in our CMCS Middle School world. Yes, there will be items that need to be completed after our school day, but if students are working smarter (and not harder), they should be able complete quality work within our given due dates.  Please ask your scholar to see some of their work in progress. Feel free to add your input/suggestions if what you are seeing is NOT quality work. We want everyone to try his or her best this new year–no shortcuts!  Quarter 2 ends on January 21, so all work must be completed and graded by then. We have started a new Cycle 3 (Power) which will span over the 5-week period of closing Quarter 2/starting fresh for Quarter 3. Students will be demonstrating the power of words with the writing of persuasive letters, essays, and memoirs. Look for these creations at home!

We also started our New Year with some New Goals:  Stay organized and write down all assignments. All students are required to keep an agenda of daily work as well as the study guides for each cycle which provide a scaffold for what we intend to complete each week. We have been taking time to make sure all students are doing this essential written reminder each day after lunch. Also, we have been stressing the creation of active study methods such as making flashcards, creating mock quizzes, and using online resources (like Quizlet) to help review each cycle’s vocabulary words and concepts.  Students cannot remember information just by reading over notes=passive study method. Instead, children should be actively pulling out important information by using sticky note annotations, writing dual-entry journals, and producing notecard summaries. Please know have reviewed and modeled all these important “smart” habits, but students MUST “practice” them at home as well.
