On Friday, all of Upper Elementary went to the South Carolina Aquarium. The aquarium is laid out as a journey through the habitats of South Carolina. The habitats we journeyed through were the Mountain Forest, the Piedmont Region, the Coastal Plain and Saltmarsh Aviary, the Coast, and the Ocean. Returning to school, each student will be working in groups on a research project about one of the habitats of South Carolina. Each project will be presented on a different technology tool such as making a website or a digital storybook. We are so excited to have the students learning and exploring new digital project tools! Check out some of the wildlife we saw at the aquarium.
In the classroom, we have been working on a homophones in our language studies. Each grade level has specific activities to complete with a homophone word list throughout the week. Also, our first week back with Wordly Wise was a success! Remember, the weekly test is on Thursday and the new unit begins on Friday. Most of the students have time in their day to complete the Wordly Wise activities in class. If not, the students should be bringing home their workbook and completing the daily activity at home. All students should be studying and reading the story at home to ensure success on their weekly test!
In math, the 4th and 5th years have been working with various parts of a whole; fractions, decimals, percents, and proportions. The 6th years have begun their study of algebraic concepts and will continue with this throughout the rest of the year. Also, I gave the students some lessons on various math games with dice. We have been playing Farkle, which works with mental addition of large numbers. Also, we have been playing Fraction Reducing War with the 30-sided dice. The students are encouraged to practice these games after they have completed their daily works and many can be played at home too. Reminder, math homework books need to be returned to school on Friday morning. Please look over your child’s work and let me know if you have any concerns.
Have a great week!
